The Middlesmoor Herdwick Flock

The flock was started 25 years ago, with two ewes from Harry Hinde. Harry was born and lived in Ennerdale in the Lake District, but moved to Yorkshire, married and farmed in the Dales.

From two ewes the Middlesmoor flock grew, initially buying in ewes from the fell farms of Margaret Gass and Bob Bates, and their friend Frank Hindmoor in Wasdale and latterly from Tyson Hartley and his son, Anthony of Turner Hall Farm in the Duddon.

Tups have been bought from the Cockermouth and the Broughton tup sales that take place every year. Genetics from using tups of a number of well recognised breeders have added to the Middlesmoor flock over the years, including those of Andrew Nicholson, Stanley Jackson, Kevin Wrathall, George Harryman, and Anthony Hartley.

The quality of the Middlesmoor flock is recognised to be high by the Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association with homebred tups and ewes registered and approved each consecutive year in the annual inspections. For more details, please visit www.herdwicksheep.co.uk
